Treebark

Beaten
bark or kumut as it is known to the Orang Ulu is one of the
world’s oldest fabrics and predates the earliest weaving. Traditionally,
the upriver folk used it to make men’s waistcoats, hats and
remarkably strong ropes. |
|
| Kumut,
or beaten tree bark, is an ancient fabric that can be put to
a variety of modern uses. |

|
|
While still used for traditional artifacts that make delightful
souvenirs, bark cloth is today the material for decorative
bags, purses, key chains, letter holders and as a canvas for
artists.
