Retailers in the main towns report that wood carving are the most popular items. Also selling well were baskets followed by pottery, beadwork and fabrics. Most items were bought as souvenirs but more than one third are bought for their artistic value. The size of the product affects sales as most buyers want items they can easily take with them back to their home country.

Can I ship larger items?
Curio, antique and furniture shops in the larger towns provide shipping services for larger items such as mats, furniture and ceramics. However this service may not be available in smaller shops. For arrangements in shipping items in bulk contact the Sarawak Craft Council.

Where Can I Find Traditional or Antique Items?
If you have the time you can travel round longhouses and kampungs and find rare examples of your own. But this depends on luck. However, the proprietors of some curio shops have become authorities on and connoisseurs of local arts and crafts in their own right. They regularly travel upcountry to buy the best pieces. A little time spent browsing the shops and talking to the owners will soon establish those who really know their subject and sell the most authentic pieces.

Are Sarawak Crafts Available Overseas?
Sarawak handicrafts are on display at the Kraftangan Malaysia, Taman Templer Park, Rawang Selangor; Kompleks Budaya Kraft Kuala Lumpur, Jalan Conlay, Kuala Lumpur; Textile Museum, Jalan Sultan Hishamuddin, Kuala Lumpur and the Langkawi Craft Museum, Langkawi. Some shops in the Tanglin/Orchard Road area of Singapore and in Kuala Lumpur’s Central Market specializing in Asian arts and crafts stock Sarawak items.
