Bead Work

From time immemorial Sarawakians have decorated their lives with beads. Costumes, baby carriers, ladies bags and sun hats are alive with ornately traced designs picked out in glowing, primary colours. The Orang Ulu have made this art their own. From mass produced plastic beads to collector’s items worth thousands of dollars, they turn beads into beauty.
The colourful kaleidoscope that is life in Sarawak is reflected in the colour and vibrancy of intricate beadwork. Beads add a new dimension to everyday objects making each a collector’s item.

The Lun Bawang from Long Tuma make their own ceramic beads, which they form into colourful and imaginative necklaces.

These are not only highly prized in the longhouses but make unusual accessories that blend well with modern western fashions.
